Growing Together in Faith and Knowledge
Intro
Ephesians 4:11-16 is a powerful passage that speaks to the roles within the church and the importance of unity and maturity among believers. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that Christ has given different gifts to His people to equip the church for service and to build up the body of Christ. This passage encourages us to grow in our faith and knowledge of the Son of God, striving for unity and maturity as we become more like Christ.
Memory Verse
"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
Commentary
In Ephesians 4:11-16, Paul outlines the different roles that Christ has established within the church. These roles—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—are given to equip believers for service and to edify the church. The ultimate goal is to achieve unity in faith and knowledge, leading to spiritual maturity.
Paul uses the analogy of the body to describe the church, emphasizing that each part must function properly for the body to grow and build itself up in love. As we grow in Christ, we should no longer be like children, easily swayed by false teachings. Instead, we are to speak the truth in love, growing in every way into Christ, who is the head of the church. This passage calls us to work together in harmony, using our gifts to support and strengthen one another, thereby fostering unity and maturity in the body of Christ.
